La classifica delle 500 migliori università del mondo a cura della Università di Shanghai Jiao Tong
Anno 2008
L'Institute of Higher Education della Shanghai Jiao Tong University stila ogni anno una classifica delle 500 migliori università del mondo sulla base di alcuni indicatori di qualità, quali il numero di riconoscimenti internazionali ottenuti dallo staff accademico, il numero delle pubblicazioni e delle citazioni, e la performance accademica in relazione alle dimensioni dell'istituzione.
Gli indicatori utilizzati sono:
• Qualità della didattica, data dal numero degli alunni dell'istituzione che hanno vinto Premi Nobel e Medaglie Fields.
• Qualità dello staff accademico, data dal numero di Premi Nobel and Medaglie Fields vinte dallo staff dell'istituzione e dal numero dei ricercatori più citati in 21 diverse categorie.
• Rendimento dell'attività di ricerca, misurato dagli articoli pubblicati su Nature e Science e dagli articoli presenti nel Science Citation Index expanded e nel Social Science Citation Index.
• Dimensioni dell'istituzione, misurate dalla performance accademica in relazione alle dimensioni dell'istituzione.
Per ogni indicatore, alla istituzione con il punteggio più alto viene assegnato il valore 100, e il punteggio delle altre istituzioni viene calcolato come percentuale del valore più elevato. ( Fonte: Social Capital Gateway)

The Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2008
The Institute of Higher Education of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index, and academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.
Used criteria are:
• Quality of education, given by the Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
• Quality of Faculty, measured by the Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and the highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories.
• Research Output, measured through the Articles published in Nature and Science and the Articles in Science Citation Index expanded and Social Science Citation Index.
• Size of Institution, measured by the Academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.
For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. ( Fonte: Social Capital Gateway)
